Comments from Alan Bond ( ex EW driver )
Photo taken right outside the 'Walford Fish Bar' which used to appear in a few 'East Enders' episodes. It was called the Walford Fish bar long before the programme started and I am pretty sure that's where the producers pinched the name from. One of the EW regular drivers who used to do the staff bus lived at Rossington Ave and it wasn't unusual for my mate who lived there too and used to go home on the late turn and the SB driver would take the bus back into the garage for him. Very convenient. I didn't mind the 292s but I detested the 142s, all brake and bell as Alfie Harmes described it. When I worked with Bill Fitzsimmons on the 142 rota we got stuck with no 13 Spreadover for a week - it was six Kilburns, bloody hard work. The second half was just about manageable if your bus came in on time but it was usually late after getting a bashing with the schoolkids. On one occasion we took over 18 mins late with a 142 and a 266 missing that should have been in front of us. We were domino all the way to Kilburn on the first journey and I sold 392 tickets on that one journey and 300 of them were 3d. It worked out at the equivalent of exactly seven seated bus loads. Luckily, I picked up two crews at Cricklewood gar who were going down to the Crown to take over on the 16s and one of the conductors did the bell for me for that bit. When I worked out at Bletchley for UCOC, the conductors used to moan if they sold that many tickets on a shift let alone on one journey. 52s on a Sunday coulde be a bit busy too but at least you didn't get held up in traffic and you often had time for a cuppa at Vic. We were doing a short to Ladbroke grove one Sunday lunchtime and Paddy McKilbride and his mate were on the bus in front. I stood next to his conductor at the time clocks and watched him punch out dead on time for a Willesden Gar short and we followed about four minutes later. When we got to St George's Hospital at Hyde Park Corner we picked up a domino load so Paddy must have just gone by the stop and left them. It was either that or he had hidden somewhere along the way. We were slaughtered all the way to the Grove but still saw no sign of him. We asked the point inspector at the Eagle what had happened but he said he never saw Paddy go by.
