Comment by Iain Wordsworth

Thank you indeed for your delighful, absolutely fascinating website. It's so full of memories and incredible, fascinating detail, and the bus drawings are superb. More trolleybuses, especially the north-western routes, would be nice if you have the time but it's quite amazing anyway.

I haven't lived in the part of London that was Middlesex for 53 years now but I've kept my interest in the buses of my boyhood all my life. My parents told me that from a very young age, whenever we managed to get top deck front seats on our fairly frequent journeys to Victoria, I would "drive" the bus using my raincoat buttons as the steering wheel! Later, downstairs nearside front became the favourite seat as I could watch the driver changing gears.

I was myself a driver on Derby City Transport throughout in the 80s, ending up as the Works Convenor at the time of deregulation, which resulted in a short-lived (bought out by an Arriva predeccessor) employee buyout. DCT was principally a Daimler operator and for a time around then we had a handful of secondhand and knackered DMSs, which were, frankly, awful things and that's as near as I got to achieving my childhood dream of driving RTLs.

I'd like to pass on some information about the two routes I knew best, the 52 and 83: the 52 took me to senior school and to Victoria on the way to visit my aunt in Brixton and the 83 took me to Wembley and to Golders Green for a 210 to The Arsenal. it's been so interesting after all these years to find out about allocations and times. Oh, how I would have loved this in my bus spotting days! How on earth you've managed to compile the destination blind section is beyond me but I can add a couple of footnotes that I hope will help.

I can't remember exactly but I suspect it was about 1963/4, when I was 13 or 14, that I first saw a 52 displaying a "KINGSBURY GREEN" blind but I was delighted as Kingsbury wasn't listed at all on the intermediate blind at that time. At first it was only the 52s and after dropping off passengers the buses ran empty across the traffic lights and up Buck Lane to the top of the hill. There they turned left into Highfield Road and waited for time at the bottom of the road. A left turn brought them immediately back on route and the first stop, not a fare stage, was after another left turn at the small parade of shops on Kingsbury Road where they were back in service. I can say definitely that up until the end of 1967 the destination display was "KINGSBURY GREEN".

The 83 was later in using the shortwork but, whereas I remember the 52s turned round there only occasionally, the 83s seemed to use it much more frequently (There was nothing otherwise between Wembley Park and West Hendon). This happened after the route became RM operated so according to the website this was 1966; I cannot ever remember seeing an RT on a Kingsbury Green shortwork. I'm surprised that later they used the "Roe Green" suffix as the route didn't actually serve Roe Green while the shortwork only traversed the road so named for a hundred yards without stopping there.

The 83s used the same roads as the 52 to turn round but, surprisingly, they waited for time at the bottom of Buck Lane, which caused congestion when there were several of them, as happened at times. Later, presumably after complaints from drivers or other motorists, they also started waiting for time at the bottom of Highfield Road; I once saw four RMs parked there. On their returne to service I don't know if they picked up at the first stop on Kingsbury Road, which was the southbound Roe Green stop normally used by 52 and 183, as the 83s weren't back on route until the Church Lane fare stage at Kingsbury Green; more to the point, no-one would have waited for an 83 there as it was off route. Again, at least until the end of 1967. the blind showed plain "KINGSBURY GREEN" so I believe this destination deserves a place on your blind displays for both the 52 and the 83 if you are able to alter them.

The other routes that did traverse or pass Roe Green were the infrequent (by the standards of the 52 and 83) 79 and 183 but I don't think either ever used Kingsbury Green as a shortwork.
